Alimony is the financial support of one spouse to another.

During separation, alimony requires that a spouse makes a payment to their financially dependent spouse for set amount of time. This amount varies widely and depends on the needs and situation of the couple.

Typically, alimony is reserved for instances where a spouse has spent the majority of his or her life supporting the family from home, and not in the work environment—however Alimony can be awarded under many different circumstances.
